Almost every duck hunter has a system. Their systems are adapted to their hunting conditions and hunting style. While most hunters figure out how to be successful, not many solve the problem of being comfortable or adaptable to a wide variety of hunting conditions. The center of my system involves a layout boat. I have built my own boats that suit the conditions and places I hunt. I’m not an engineer, cabinet maker or professional boat builder. In fact I am a wildlife biologist who manages wetlands and loves to duck hunt. Fortunately for me, my vocation involves attracting ducks. My avocation involves getting close to them.

dog2.gif (38959 bytes)This system is not an original idea. I learned it from a fellow that is a duck hunter and a professional boat builder. I adapted his boat design to fit my hunting conditions. Trial and error over 8 years and construction of 20 boats resulted in a design in which I am satisfied.

An article in the September 1998 issue of the Missouri Conservationist describes some of the advantages of using a layout boat for hunting. This issue is on line at http://www.conservation.state.mo.us/conmag/1998/09/index.shtml
