 Announcements

Are your children interested in participating as a greeter, lector, server, usher, or gift assistant at St. Mary’s Parish.  Youth Mass is the 1st weekend of each month, October-May.  The children will be rotated, as needed, for each Youth Mass.  All children that sign-up for CCD are welcome to be an assistant.  Please see the appropriate sign-up sheet on the table in back of church.  (There will not be a sign-up in the classrooms this year.)

The Missionary Plan of Cooperation will be held the weekend of August 30 and 31, 2008.  We will have the visit of Missioner-Priest Fr. Ruben Quisver who belongs to the Institute of the Incarnate Word, a missioner-Institute born in Argentina around 24 years ago, but already working in 31 countries around the world.  As you know, every year, the Diocese invites missioners to visit our parishes that we may profit from the missioner’s experience, encouraging us to pray for them and all Catholic Missions.  Hopefully these missions will also greatly benefit from our generous financial support.  Please plan to give generously to assist fellow Catholics throughout the whole world.

There will be a retreat September 19-21, 2008, with Fr. Conrad Osterhaus, CFR, reflecting on the laity’s call to strengthen their spiritual life, held at the Franciscan Prayer Center, 2100 N. Noland Road, Independence, MO.  For more information, call Sister Josephine Boyles, OSF at 816-252-1673.

St. Mary’s Parish Council will meet Wednesday evening, August 20, 2008, at 7:00 p.m.

There will be a Community Blood Center blood drive held at St. Mary’s School on Thursday, August 21, 2008, from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.  To make an appointment online go to www.esavealifenow.org and use Sponsor Code stmaryaltarsoc.  You may also contact Darlene Link at 542-2220.

Each Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., the Prayer Group at St. Mary’s meets in the Chapel in Tally Hall.  If you would like to attend, they would love to have you join them.

Anyone wishing to contribute towards having memorial flowers on the altar at St. Mary’s should contact Beverly at Lauren Claire, 542-3477, or Ann Campbell, 542-0234.  The Altar Society will provide flowers two weeks of each month.  If you have questions, please call either of the above numbers.  Thank you.

Please remember that contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Msgr. Summers Scholarship Fund at any time during the year.  You may drop them in the offering baskets marked for “Scholarship Fund”, or stop by the Parish Office during the business hours.

Please continue to save Best Choice UPC labels and put them in the container in the vestibule of the church.  Proceeds from the UPC labels are a fund raiser for the St. Anne’s Altar Society.  If you have any questions, please contact Judy Adams, who is in charge of the project.  Thanks!

Please remember when you can not serve as a Mass Assistant on the day you have been scheduled, it is your responsibility to find someone to take your place.  Thank you!

If you have items of interest for the bulletin or would like a Mass said, please call the Parish Office with your need instead of telling Fr. or Cheryl in other places besides church or the Parish Office.  If that is not handy for you, please give them your request in writing so that it will not be forgotten when they return to the Parish Office.  If you have money, please put it in an envelope and designate what it is for.  Thank you.

On the Lighter Side...

INNOCENCE IS PRICELESS:

One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque.  It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it.  The six-year-old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, “Good morning, Alex.”  ‘Good morning, Pastor,’he replied, still focused on the plaque.  ‘Pastor, what is this?’  The pastor said, ‘Well son, it’s a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service.’  Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque.  Finally, little Alex’s voice, barely audible and trembling with fear asked, ‘Which service, the 8:00 or the 10:00?’
